There Are Worse Things
She Could Do

Ilene Kristen (Roxy) is well-known for her soap roles, but she could have
been immortalized in one of the most successful films of all time.
The actress, who originated the role of Patty Simcox in the Broadway production of Grease in 1972, said no to the film. "It was one thing doing that character onstage," muses Kristen. "It was another thing being immortalized as a cheerleader. I was so the antithesis of a cheerleader. And by the time [the film was made] I was playing bad girls. I was doing Ryan's Hope already (playing Delia Reid Ryan, et al.). I would have liked to have done the film, I just didn't want to do that part."
When SOAP OPERA WEEKLY spoke with Kristen, she was planning a trip to Los Angeles for Grease's 30th anniversary. She doubted she would meet up with John Travolta (who played Doody onstage), but she does have fond memories of working with him. "I knew he was special," Kristen recalls. "He had a great deal of vulnerability and those ice-blue eyes. He was adorable. He was a baby, 19 or something."
She wasn't hopelessly devoted to him, though. "I was the youngest person in the show, and then John (who was two years younger) stole all my thunder," she says with a laugh.
